Potential Health Issues

Blue Wave French Bulldogs
November 24, 2023

French Bulldogs are prone health conditions as with all breeds of dogs.   Generally they are not to serious.  . . First, let’s take a look at the general health conditions suffered by French Bulldogs.

Another one of the main issues with French Bulldogs is due to their flat face shape, referred to as ‘brachycephalic.’ Unfortunately, while many people find this face shape ‘cute,’ it can have some serious health implications for these little dogs. These include increased risks of overheating in temperatures over 85 degrees.   Also it can mean that your frenchy will love running outside in the cold/snow, but the cold air goes right into their sinuses.  Therefor they cannot stand the heat or cold for extended amounts of time.   They are house dogs and should be treated as such.   Most frenchies prefer to spend time with their humans rather than being outside alone.

French Bulldogs can get allergies, just like people.  My goal is always all organic.  Never put chemicals on your lawn and then let your frenchie bulldog run around.  Sometimes their food can be a source of allergies.  If your dog is licking it's paws, this could be the problem.   Try switching to a food that has very high standards and complete.  My favorites are Royal Canine French Bulldog food or Iams adult dog food.   Having tried many types of food over the years, these are always my go to.   We always have a nice poop, nice coat and it is very palatable.   Thats the goal.

Soft palate can be a problem with french bulldogs.  What does that mean ?   As the puppy gets older, sometimes they can develop extra tissue in their throat.   This can give them the feeling of something in their throat.   If needed, this extra tissue can be removed by your vet.   It doesn't seem to happen very often, but it is a health problem.

French bulldogs with a very short back.   Oh, they are all the rage.   Frenchies with short backs look cute but that short back can cause some problems.  Ideally in my opinion, to avoid back issues, your french bulldogs back should be slightly longer than the dog is tall.  An example, if your french bulldog is 12 inches tall, it should be about 14 inches long.
